"The Four Star" Edition No. 3 - 06 May - June 2006
COMMANDER’S
CORNER First the good news. The SAL has reorganized and had their elections.
Thanks to Karl Christoffers and Charles McDonald. Also thanks to the SAL members
who have worked to make this happen. Congratulations to the new Officers. They
have some good projects in the planning stages. With this new group of officers,
I am sure they will make it work. The House Committee has leased/rented a new
Juke box”. Actually, it is a computer that plays over 4,100 songs. Therefore
everyone can find music that meets their tastes. The machine is proving to be
very, very popular. About 3 months ago, the House Committee had our pool table refurbished
and in general brought it up to date. Someone, or more than one, person recently
vandalized the repaired table. A lot of the repairs were damaged. Once again the
table has been repaired and is back in use. Legion Home Inc. and the House
Committee have hired a new maintenance company. The Post Home looks great now.
Now the bad news. One of the large HVAC units has reached the end of it’s useful life. We
can no longer get spare parts for the unit. It is 23 years old. We have
purchased a new unit at a cost of $14, 500. We expect it will be in place in the
next 30 days. Ouch! Remember to vote in the Post elections coming up on
June 6th. Tom Davis Post 217 Commander P.S. Don’t forget to check out our web page -That web address is - www.al2l7cpmd.us UNIT 217 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A big “Thank You” to all the Unit 217
members who pitched in to cook and serve the spaghetti dinner on March
31st, and to all the Post and The Unit members and guests for attending and
supporting our fundraiser. It was very successful, and I heard some say “It
was the best spaghetti I have ever eaten”. Our Easter Party, hosted by Charlie Allen and Katy
Beard was another big day for our community children. All the usual games, egg
hunt, the pizza, craft table, and the candy and gifts were enjoyed to the
fullest. Thanks to Miss College Park and the Miss Greenbelt for their
assistance. Our 2006 Miss College Park, Vickie Kalasinsky, is
already quite busy with the obligations of her office. She is a lovely young
lady and we’re fortunate to have her represent College Park. We wish her well
as she represents College Park in the Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant this
coming June at Hagerstown, Md. Members have been very supportive of the “Clothing
Bazaar’ for Perry Point VA Medical Center that was held on April 15th. I took
a car full of clothing and personal items for the veterans. Membership is coming along nicely. We have had several
new members voted in and the renewals are still arriving weekly. We should make
goal soon thanks to Sarah Brown and her assistant Pearl Weidner. Keep our ill and hospitalized members in your prayers. Yours in service, not self, Ivy Christoffers Unit 217
President 301-595-5225 UNIT 217 MEMBERSHIP We have four new members
this month. Their names are - Eleanor Sines, Christa Thorpe, Jennifer Field, and
Donnetta Weedorn. A big “Welcome” to the new Unit 217 ladies, we’re
looking forward to meeting all of you at our regular meetings on the first
Tuesday of each month. Meetings start at 8PM. Ladies, we have 196 members
at the present time and need 21 more to renew, (or new members) to reach our
goal plus five. If you know anyone that has not renewed their membership, please
let me know, and if you see a lady in our Post that is eligible for membership,
sign them up! Thanks for all the help with
recruiting the new ladies. I hope to see you all at next meeting. Membership
Chairman Sarah
Brown 410-672-6726 Chaplain’s Corner I am hoping that everyone had a “Spirit Filled Easter’. As you look
around, you can see that the trees, flowers, and grass have renewed themselves.
This is the time of the year to reflect on renewing our minds, hearts, and
spirits as we march forward to another year of service. Bear in mind that our
Legion Motto states “FOR GOD and COUNTRY”. Please remember, as always, our men and women in uniform, our POW’S and
MIA’S and our sick and hospitalized comrades. Enjoy the Spring weather! And as always, thanks to God for all His Blessings on each and everyone. Ron Gray Chaplain - Post 217

Commander, Election Committee POST 2I7 MEMBERSHIP Thanks to all our members, our year-to-date Post membership stands at 382
as this newsletter goes to press. We need 35 new members or renewals to reach
our Dept. goal. I am sure with a little more effort we can get our 2005 members
to all ‘Re-up” or bring in some friends from work, church, or anywhere you
gather with friends. Hats off to Bill Bladen who has recruited more than a
dozen new members from the Army Reserve Center in Riverdale. Remember, member recruitment is the responsibility of
all Post members. Thanks for all your help in trying to reach our goal. I know
we can do it. Fred

IS
THIS A GREAT COUNTRY OR WHAT? When the United States entered World War 1, it found it was not prepared with enough of the right equipment for the troops. One piece of gear that was sorely lacking was some mode of transport for the scouts. Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer at the time in America and they made available their entire production of motorcycles for the Army. By the end of the “Great War’ the U.S. Army had used approximately 18,000 Harleys. One day after signing the Armistice, Corporal Roy Holtz of Chippewa Falls Wisconsin was the first American to enter Germany. And yes, he was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
