Commanders Message

Hello Everyone.

I pray that you all are doing fine, and staying cool (smile). We had some really hot days at the beginning of June. Here's good news, we've had some good people step up and take positions at the Post. Our new First Vice is Bill Knupp , and our Second Vice is Mike Hall. Thanks guys, so very much. Bill Knupp is also our Adjutant. Now maybe we can keep the Post together for the rest of the year. This is my the second year as Commander, and I don't want to sound like a broken record, but we need to make some money! Come out and give us some ideas, if you've got any, so we can keep our beloved Post doors open, and continue to do that "Hoodoo That We Do Best"!

We've had some really nice events in the past two weeks. Our "Special Olympics Bowling Team" had it's Annual Banquet at the Post and it was a very "special" affair. We also had the "Special Olympics Torch Run" stop at the Post. They had about 150 officers running in the heat with the torch, which opened the Summer Games at Towson University. We had hamburgers, hot dogs, cookies, drinks and more for all of them. It was something to see - all of 'em running up US 1. The next day we held the "Heroes to Hometowns and Wounded Warriors" picnic on the grounds of Walter Reed at the Mologne House. It was well attended, and about 300 people came by. The State Commander, Michael Mooney, and the Past State and National Commanders, Clarence Bacon and Gail Murdock helped us out greatly. We also held "Flag Day Honors and Retirement of Colors" on June 14 which was also the United States Army's birthday.

Also a big "Thank You" to all volunteers and Post employees who have stepped up and done some good things for our brothers and sisters and community. Pat, all I can say is "Thanks" and God bless all of us at the "Best Post" in the state! r

American Legion Post 217 Membership

Our 2011 memberships renewals are still coming in, and we are currently at 90% of our goal. Please Note: If your ID card says 2010, Your Membership Is About To Expire! Although 2011 cards valid, renewals for 2012 will also be available the first week of July. I know that the membership year is confusing to many of you, the simple answer is, your membership card is valid from July and through the last day of June, starting on the year shown on your card. So why the rush to meet quotas? It all boils down to:- 1.- Determining awards.  2.- then preparing membership cards for the following year.  3.- computing the available funds for the convention and our associated budgets. When you fail to renew your membership in a timely manner (Preferably by the end of February) you run the risk of loosing credit for the years of continuous service.

So here are are a few simple steps for you to take so your renewal process will be easy for you, and more efficient  for us....

1.- always include a phone number where we can reach you if we have questions about your renewal application.

2.- If you move or relocate, please let us know so that we will be able to up-date our records.

3.- Renew your membership in July or as soon as you possibly can.

4.- Please don't hesitate - Contact me if you have any questions.

5.- If you haven't already done so, look up any of our new Post officers and ask how you can help make this the best Post in the country!

Yours in Service  Bill Robertson
