Unit 217 President's Message Hello Unit 217 Members. I hope this finds all of you well and awaiting the arrival of spring flowers and sunshine. This past year has gone by very quickly. It could not have been a success without the help of some wonderful Unit members. I would like to thank all of your Unit officers for their continued support and eagerness to help whenever needed. I know whomever decides to become Unit President this next term will have the same support and the same helpfulness. I hope some of you had the opportunity to attend the Veteran's Creative Arts Festival at High Point High School, which was organized by Ivy Christoffers. I would like to thank her for all her hard work, endless hours, and unyielding commitment to our veterans. The Unit would also acknowledge Angie Rodriguez for once again directing another extremely successful Miss College Park Pageant. It was Angie's 20th year with the Pageant, and they just keep getting better and better. Thank you Devin Finley for a great year as Miss College Park 2010, and welcome to Jordyn Goddard as the new Miss College Park 2011. We look forward to working with you throughout the year. The Unit is very proud of our Americanism Essay winners. We had over 300 essays to judge, and we were able to award 17 essays in 3 categories from 3 different schools. problems. The first place essays have been sent to the Department level to be judged. Angie, Ivy, and Judy Beard are to be thanked for their involvement with the Americanism Essay Contest. We have a Spaghetti Dinner coming up on April 29th. Mary is again making her famous spaghetti sauce, so please come out and enjoy a great dinner. On a personal note, I would like to thank my husband, Howard, for being by my side again this, my last year. Perk and Dink, I couldn't have done this without all your. Angie, Ivy, Sharon, Joan, Mary Elizabeth, Anne, CJ, Pat, the members of the SAL, the employees of Post 217, and those who sit at my favorite end of the bar, thank you all for making this year fun, crazy, and productive. Thanks to all our veterans, we do it all for you. Have a great summer and remember to keep smiling. Your Outgoing Unit President Diana Mays
Miss College Park Pageant News
To all my Post and Unit 217 Family - I'd like to share with you all this photo of our beautiful 20th Miss College Park 2011 and her lovely Court of Honor. This year marks my 20th Anniversary as the Executive Director of this wonderful scholarship program. I was recently asked how much scholarship money we've raised for the girls over the course of 20 years, and how many young women have we helped obtain their college degrees, and the numbers were actually staggering! We have raised nearly $100,000 during the past 20 years to assist over 240 young women to continue their education! This could not have been done without the help, support, and assistance of many wonderful people and all the groups and service organizations in our area. First of all, I would like to thank our Unit for believing in this program, when in 1991, I asked you all to be sponsors. I would never have been able to bring it to the level we have grown to without each of you. I would also like to thank Post 217 as well as our SAL members for always being supportive. Next, a huge thank you to the City of College Park for allowing the Unit to apply for a Community Service Grant which brought the pageant scholarship dollars to new heights, and assists us in awarding a scholarship to each and every girl who competes in the program. This tear, we had 13 contestants and every one of them walked away with a minimum of $150. The pageant awards were $5,400 this year, and the winner earned $2,200 of the Kitty! I would like to say a special "Thank You" to the College Park Downtown Merchants Authority for awarding scholarship money to the program for the last 15 years. And finally, to the College Park Moose Lodge No. 453 on Metzerott Road, and especially to Jimmy Cornell, for allowing me to hold the event there annually. All of this help and support all as well as some of my closest and dearest friends, allows me to add to the scholarship account and thus making sizeable dollars available to the young women seeking higher education. as for me, well right now, I am feeling like I can make it for another 20 years, as long as I've got your continued friendship and support. I'd like to thank you all from the bottom of mt heart. Sincerely, - Angie Rodriguez Executive Director - Miss College Park Pageant First Vice President - Unit 217
