"The Four Star" September/October Edition No. 9 - 90
Commander's Message Another convention has come and gone, and we did very well in the awards category this year, bringing home awards for Special Olympics Summer and Winter programs. and a Platinum Sponsor Award. I want to thank everyone for their hard work and contributions in support of Special Olympics this past year. The Monday fish fry had the best attendance in recent years, with over 400 pounds of fish fried and consumed by the attendees, Sadly, the Post Everlasting Service had the worst attendance i have ever witnessed in all my years at the conventions. nearly two thirds of the room eas occupied. In addition, Legion College and a lot of business meetings were not well attended and attendance overall was very low at the Convention. However, all the Delegates attended every session. Thanks to all our Delegates for their participation in all events this year. I want to personally thank everyone whose hard work and those unselfish efforts are improving the outside and inside of our Post. Upcoming events are in planning stages for our Post Home. Please make an effort to attend these events and support your Post. E. Glenn Butler Commander Post 217

2nd Vice Commanders Message Hello everybody. I am Eugene Glover, the 2nd Vice Commander for Post 217. I want to start off and thank everybody for their support for American Legion Post 217. I must add that we have the most dynamic members in all of the state if not the nation. So I hope everybody will keep up the good work! We have a big event coming up on Sunday, September 13th. This is the famous "Crab Feast" and everybody is really excited by this event. It has been long wait for this, and will come sooner than we expect. Not only do we have crabs, but also hamburgers and hot dogs and the usual side dishes of corn on the cob, coleslaw and potato salad. This event will be co-sponsored by Prince George's Elks Lodge No. 1778. And new for this year we'll be having some great entertainment by a DJ playing all of your favorites from today and yesteryear. There will be raffles and other activities for you to enjoy. If you are not a crab eater you can have 'burgers, dogs and side dishes for $15.00. Kids are the same price. Get your tickets soon as we expect this to be a sell-out. The bartenders have tickets for sale and I would like to remind everyone that there will be - No Carry Outs - and that goes for all foods. All food must be kept in the back hall! We are excited about this event and we will be having the time of our lives! I know many of us will be talking about this for generations to come! So come on dawn for all the good times. Tickets - $30 in advance - $40 at the door. Eugene Glover 2nd Vice Commander
Unit 217 President's Message I hope all are having a nice summer. On behalf of your 2009 - 2010 Auxiliaries Officers, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to serve the Unit. We are all looking forward to a productive and fun year. We would like to congratulate Unit 217 for a rewarding time at the annual Convention. Our Unit was recipient of 13 awards this year, which are displayed on the display case as you walk in the door of the Legion. Please stop by and take a look. and if you see any of last years Officers, or Committee Members, congratulate them on a job well done. We would like to thank Ivy, Angie and Mary for the hours spent on making sure all reports were completed. A special thanks to Mary Keller for yet another wonderful spaghetti dinner on Friday July 31st. Mark you calendar, as the next spaghetti dinner will be Friday, October 30th, from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. We would love it if you could bring a desert for our "Desert Table". Mary's spaghetti is worth making plans for. We have a lot of things coming up in the near future, including Youth Recognition Day on Oct 17th, and then Sunday Oct. 25th for the Children's Halloween Party. Please consult the Auxiliary announcement board in the Legion for all upcoming events and times. Our Unit will be out to collect supplies for area schools. As you go out shopping and if you see some great deals on school supplies, won't you consider picking up a few extra items that we can use in our Community Service Project? If you would like to contact me, you can do so on line at - ih8plaq@hotmail.com Thanks in advance for all your support in these upcoming projects and events. - Always Keep Smiling - Dianna Nix Unit 217 President
Unit 217 Membership Report We have started out with a nice round of 45 members which we turned in at the convention on Jul 17th. Our membership theme for 2009 - 2010 is "All Gave Some, Some Gave All". This years icon is an eagle, and the 7 District Presidents were presented with an :Eagle Egg" that'll hatch when their District makes goal. The eagles aerie (nest) is in the hands of our 1st Vice, Pat Rice, who is also our membership Chair. The "Booby Prize" is known as "Elvira", a lazy eagle who sits on her duff. You don't want to contribute to the possibility that the Southern Maryland District may end up with "Elvira". To ensure we do all we can to support our District and our Unit, we must pay our dues as soon as possible. Send in your $20 dues to me in care of the address on the front of this newsletter. Don't wait for your notice from National, as they are only sending out 2 notices this year . The high cost of postage has made it financially prohibitive for National to send out more than 2 reminders. We should not be waiting for reminders, as we know dues must be paid every year to belong to this great organization. Be an "Early Bird" and get "Tweet Bird" stamped on your new card, so you can be in the drawing to have your dues paid by your Unit next Year. Your dues pay for all the great benefits that are available to you simply by belonging to the American Legion Auxiliary, and also helps your Unit support the many charitable events for our Veterans, Youth and Communities. I want to congratulate Unit 217 for their great showing on the Department and District levels. It takes many volunteers and many hours spent on the programs to win these awards. We'll compete with many, many Unitsto win recognition for our efforts. On another note, we are always searching out qualified women to join the Auxiliary. Have you asked someone to join our Unit lately? We continue to lose members through death, moving away, or simply disinterest every year, so we'll always have to continue to recruit sign up members to fill the gaps in our membership due to these losses. Membership is the backbone of every organization of this type. So let's keep it strong, keep it healthy and keep our "Eagles" flying through the years. Auxiliary Chaplain
Auxiliary member Judy Spencer, wife of Legionaire Bill Harris, passed away July 21st, after a long battle with cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill. Dawn Daly lost her husband Willie in a serious car accident. It is so sad when a young person is taken away suddenly. so please pray for Dawn, who is the daughter of Betty Wolman, who suffered a stroke a few months ago. Betty is home and making great progress despite the recent family tragedy. Also please keep Virginia Galvin in your thoughts. Her cancer has returned and she's coping as well as could be expected. I sure hope this'll be all negative news I'll have to report for a while. I hope you all stay well and enjoy the fall, as it's one of the most "Beautiful Seasons" of all.
