Vicki Kalasinsky Crowned Miss College Park
By
Ivy Christoffers What an evening!!
Eighteen of the most beautiful and talented young ladies in the area competing
for the chance to represent College Park American Legion Auxiliary in the Miss
Maryland Scholarship Pageant. Of course, hopes are high that this is only the
beginning of the journey to the coveted title of “Miss America.” These
Scholarship pageants go a long way to provide monies for higher education for
young ladies and we must congratulate Angie Rodriguez for her 15 years of
dedication to this program. Angie, the executive producer and motivating factor
behind the Miss College Park Scholarship Pageant, has been
responsible for more than $150,000 being awarded over the past 15 years to
deserving young ladies. Her peers in the pageant recognized Angie 's years of
dedication with a special presentation. This year was an exceptionally
entertaining ageant. Miss America
of 2000, Heather French- Henry of Kentucky, was our special guest. Heather’s
platform was Veterans, and she continues to work on their behalf, an issue very
near and dear to our hearts. Several other young pageant winners were
guests as well. These young ladies were all introduced and were
resplendent in their crowns and finery. The contestants competed in casual wear,
fitness wear (bathing suits), eveningwear, talent and interviews. They were all
impressive. The ultimate winner, Vicki Kalasinsky, shone as the brightest star
in the galaxy. Vicki is a junior at Maryland University studying cell biology
and molecular genetics. Her home is in Olney. I spoke with her mother who spent
many weeks working on her gown and jewels. Vicki performed a baton twirling
exercise that had the entire audience on its feet applauding at her completion.
We are fortunate to have such a lovely, talented and bright young lady to
succeed Erica Williams, the retiring Miss College Park who represented us so
well. Erica presented Vicki with her
crown. The young ladies were escorted by the handsome young NJROTC members who
were beaming from ear to ear. Captain Davis was very proud of his cadets. There
were many other awards presented in several categories, and each contestant was
presented with a check. During intermission there was a vote taken by the
audience to choose “Miss Photogenic” and that award went to Ninia Augustin.
The results of the pageant were Fifth place: Melissa Anderson, Fourth Place:
Chia-Jung Tsay, Third Place: Brittany Lietz, Second Place: Heather Molnar and First
Place: Vicki Kalasinsky. A special vote of thanks to those who supported this program in any way. Especially the Holiday Inn who housed our judges, the Hampton Inn who housed some of our guests and contestants, Alerios Restaurant who hosted the luncheon with the mayor of College Park who presented the contestants with a paper weight to commemorate the occasion, and any number of sponsors who donated monies for the scholarships. This continues to be one of my favorite programs and it gets bigger and better each year. Congratultions, Vicki!
Vicki Kalasinsky, Miss College Park 2006, is a 21 year old junior at Maryland University studying cell biology and molecular genetics. Vicki has previously won four other pageants across Maryland. As a winner of the Miss College Park Scholarship Pageant, she received a $2,000 scholarshop |
