"The Four Star"

September - October 2011

Edition No. 5 - 11

Commanders Message

Hello Everyone.

I pray that you all are doing fine, and staying cool (smile). We had our State Convention back in July and it was a nice affair. We did not have our usual "Hospitality Room" this year - we're still having problems with our financial situation. What we did was have it for only one day on Thursday and it went well. It was at Thunder Island again at Mary and Ivy's condo. Thanks again you guys for letting us have at your place this year.

I had the honor of cooking at the "Fish Fry" this time around, lots of fun, especially thanks to Gail Murdock. It was very hot with no wind at all. And as usual, Gail has never let us down, and did his usual great job like he's done so many times at Walter Reed with us. He is for sure one if our great " Past State (Department) Commanders.

One of the most important things I came back with was the very important fact that we have to work on getting our Congressmen and Senators to get legislation for ou veterans passed. We should all call the staffers and write the members of Congress. Calling seems to get their attention best.

I am starting to form a "Dance Committee" to help us raise some money for the Post. We have a nice big hall and it's not being used to it's potential at all. If you have some ideas, please let us know what your thoughts are, and come on down for our first dance on Oct. 8th. We will be hosting Johnnie Seaton doing :Elvis", and he's really good!

l would also like to have a "Halloween Costume Dance" with prizes for "Best Outfits". So come on out to the Post and get your "Trick or Treat" on with us! Also a big "Thank You" to all the volunteers and Post employees. God bless all of you and our great country.

Elando Lindsey

Post Commander

 1st Vice Commanders Message

American Legion Post 217 Membership

Our 2012 memberships renewals are in full swing. Currently 60 "Early Birds" have renewed at the Post with another 13 paid on line through the National Headquarters.  When we add our 60 "paid-up-for-life" members, we are at 50% of our goal. Keep these renewals coming in, and lets try for 100% this year. and so remember, renew now, don't wait until the last minute. Renew as soon as you can after the Convention, include a phone number where we can reach you in case we have any questions, and if you relocate, let us know so we can up-date our records.

Yours in Service

William E. Knupp

The Budget and Standing Rules have been reviewed, voted on, passed, and are set to go. And boy, did we go! Unit 217 is proud sponsor of a lovely young lady, Briana Hall, who was elected Governor of Maryland Girls State 2011. Three cheers for Briana and Angie Rodriguez, Girls State Chairman.

Our membership theme this year is all about the flag and it's beautiful stars. Department First Vice President, our own Ivy Christoffers, is "Captain Brightstar" of the "Starship Enterprise". The crewmembers are seniors - "Shining Stars" and juniors "Starlettes". So if we all get our dues in quickly, we won't leave Ivy's ship stuck at the dock! We have some events in the making, so be sure to mark-up your calendars. The first bid one is the "Charlotte Hall Carnival" with the theme of the "Fabulous Fifties, Let's Rock n' Roll"(!), which is being held Sept. 17th. We are also hosting our annual "Children's Halloween Party" on Sunday, Oct.30th from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM, and it's always a whole lot of fun for everyone!

Don't forget that we have dinner and dancing every Friday night at the Post and we also have dinners on Wednesday and Thursday nights with $1.00 beers!

We are currently underway with our annual "School Supply drive" to benefit many of our local schools. We are looking for new notebook binders and loose leaf paper, composition books, pencils, crayons, erasers, etc. Please bring your donations to the Post and put them in the basket or box in the lounge. I'm sure that all schools will greatly appreciate any help we can give them.

Thanks to members, Ivy, Joan, Pat, Elizabeth and Angie for their attendance at the convention this past July. We all learned some valuable stuff and had some fun too!

I also want to send a great big "Thank You" to Larry Condatore, Charlie Allen and the whole Bingo crew for all their dedicated work each week. They are our Posts "Lifeline" at this point in time. Until next time!

Unit 217 Chaplains Corner

Hello everyone. My name is Pat Ferguson and I am your new Unit Chaplain for this year and hopefully, I won't have too much to report! But people do get sick and injured and it's my job to keep you all informed about the health and well-being of our members.

First off, Ritchie Keller (Unit President Mary Keller's husband) fell at home the 9th of August and hit his head. The next day while he was being released from the hospital, he had an episode with his heart and will require a procedure to be performed on the 15th of August. Please keep hi in your prayers.

And now on a happier note, congratulations go out to one of our former bartenders, Linda, and Vinny Marinucci on their marriage on June 20th, this year. If I've missed anyone, please let me or someone at he Post know. You should call me at 301-412-2278 with any information about our Post or Unit members who may be sick or in distress. Looking forward to serving you as your new Chaplain

Pat Ferguson
